While Steve Earle has long been my favorite artist, following his career has led me to several other artists that I might have missed if it wasn’t for some connection to Steve. Justin has to fall into this category since he has the greatest connection to Steve of any artist I know. He is, as I’m sure you already know, Steve’s oldest son.
Like most Steve Earle fans, I became aware of his son’s name when he would dedicate the song “Little Rock N Roller” to him during his concerts.
The first time I was aware that Justin was getting involved in music is when he played guitar on “Here I Am” from Steve’s El Corazon album in 1997.
His first full-length CD, The Good Life, was released this year. He’s already played the Grand Ole Opry and been nominated for an Americana Music Award as one of top Emerging Artists.
Farm Aid’s music festival will be broadcast live in high-definition on DirecTV’s The 101 Network on September 20, 2008.
In addition to a performance by Steve Earle, the event will feature performances by Farm Aid president and founder Willie Nelson, Neil Young, John Mellencamp and Dave Matthews.
Coverage on The 101 Network will air 4 p.m. to 11 p.m.
The show will rebroadcast in its entirety four times, the first starting immediately following the end of the live broadcast and then three more times on Sept. 21.
Of all the live albums released by Steve Earle, this is my favorite. It was only released in Europe on a label called Windsong in 1992. The catalog number is WINCD020.
I think the sound quality is a lot better than “Shut Up And Die Like An Aviator” and I really like the song selection too. I think this is the only place you can get live versions of “Even When I’m Blue” and ‘San Antonio Girl”. It’s also his only album to contain the song “When Will We Be Married”.
The complete song list is:
Copperhead Road
San Antonio Girl
Even When I’m Blue
My Old Friend The Blues
Someday
The Devil’s Right Hand
Down The Road
Snake Oil
Johnny Come Lately
When Will We Be Married
Little Rock N Roller
Dead Flowers
My Baby Worships Me
This was recorded on November 29, 1988 at The Town & Country Club in London, England.
This is another one of those CDs that was so much easier to find 10 or 15 years ago, but is long out of print.
I saw a couple of them for sale on Half.com, but they wanted $99.00 or more for them, which seems a little too high, but then again, it’s great!
NPR.org has posted Steve’s performance at the Newport Folk Festival on August 2nd, 2008 on their web site. You can listen to the show on their site or download the free podcast through itunes, zune, etc…

Steve Earle was featured on two trading cards in the ProSet MusiCards series, In the first series he was on card #167. He’s wearing sunglasses on this card. In the second series, he was on card #334. That’s the card where he’s playing the guitar.
These came out in 1991. You see them on Ebay once in a while and they usually can be bought for a dollar or two.
This book is a compilation of things Steve Earle has said in interviews and from the stage. Steve Earle fan Joanna Serraris compiled all the quotes and published the 72-page book in 1994. There were only 1500 copies made and they all were sold years ago, so it really is a “hard-to-find collectable”!
